Recycling Garden Water

The presence of usable water is decreasing rapidly and needs to be addressed. Water continues to increase in price every year. Saving water in the garden is not a difficult task, and doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Mulch maintains the quality of many plants. This helps prevent evaporation and enriches the soil. Dead organic matter can cover exposed soil. If your garden does not supply enough, bark, nut shells and other organic mulch is available at nurseries.

Plants that retain moisture are a great way to save water. Planting native plants reduce water because of the adaptations to current conditions. They are suited to, for example winter rainfall areas, and won’t need much watering in summer, and vice versa. This will not only save you a lot of water, it will also attract more birds to your garden.

Removing plants unlike those in the garden can save water. Foreign plants need an adequate amount of water to survive. This often means they leech water from surrounding plants, killing them off. Foreign plants are able to ruin a garden by killing other plants by sucking out their nutrients. Plants that do not agree with local conditions should be replace with indigenous plants.

Watch when you water. In summer, late afternoon or evening is the best time to water to prevent most of the moisture from being evaporated before it soaks into the soil and reaches the plants’ roots. This also prevents grass and leaves from burning in the midday sun. Avoid watering plants at night to preserve life and keep roots from freezing over. If you have an irrigation system with a timer, make sure you change it with each season to make sure you don’t waste water. Override it in the rainy season too.

Consider investing in a water tank to collect rainwater all year round for watering the garden and filling the swimming pool. Also recycle water through the utilization of grey water systems. Purifying water by heating it up can reduce water consumption.

Saving water is becoming more important every day, and saving water in the garden is perhaps the easiest way to cut down on your usage. Following these new techniques can significantly change the amount of money spent on utilities each month.
